Small hydro power station Weiße Sulm

Construction of a diversion plant at Weiße Sulm river in the municipality of Wies in Deutschlandsberg district.

KAT Präzisionstechnik GmbH planned the construction of a new small hydro power plant on the Weiße Sulm river in the former municipality of Wielfresen. PI Mitterfellner was commissioned with the completion of a feasibility study, the water legislation pilot audit project, planning application to water and environmental agencies as well as  construction and detailed planning. PI Mitterfellner was further responsible for local building supervision and overall management of the planning and construction phase.

This small hydro power station has been designed as a diversion plant. The water intake was executed in the form of a fixed weir with bottom outlet and side intake, and a downstream underground sedimentation basin. On the orthographic right bank of the Weiße Sulm river, a fish migration facility in the form of a vertical slot was situated. The penstock, made from glass fibre reinforced plastic with a nominal diameter of 1,100 mm overcomes a height difference of about 48 m at an overall length of about 1,680 m. The power house was built in reinforced concrete on the orographic left bank of Weiße Sulm river.  With two identical machine units consisting of a six-jet Pelton wheel and an air-cooled synchronous generator, the plant generates clean electricity for about 600 households, which is fed mainly into the public grid of utility Energie Steiermark.
